We look at three things: grain consistency, hairline fissures, and how the lot matches the lots we already hold. A block with a drifting grain pattern will polish unevenly, and a hairline you can barely see dry will open under a polishing head. Blocks that fail either check go back. Because granite is natural stone, the same commercial color varies lot to lot. For multi-piece monuments we cut every visible panel from one lot, matched under the same light in the shop — that is why a monument of ours reads as one stone rather than a patchwork.

A sandblasted letter is cut into the stone through a hand-trimmed rubber stencil, with real depth. A laser mark on granite is a surface change of a fraction of a millimeter. In full sun and rain the shallow mark grays out; the cut letter keeps its shadow line and stays readable for decades. Every inscription leaves the shop after a paper proof is approved. A wrong date caught on the proof costs nothing; the same mistake found in stone costs a panel.

Panels are set on stainless steel pins with structural adhesive, then the joint is sealed. Steel that can rust will stain the stone and eventually crack the joint from inside — we have repaired other shops’ monuments where exactly that happened. The sealant is the maintenance item nobody mentions at sale time: it protects the joint from water, and water is what moves panels in freeze and heat cycles. Our own crew seals every joint at installation, which is one reason we install ourselves instead of shipping to a third party.

A perfect monument on a poor foundation fails in a few years: it tips, joints open, and doors stop seating. We supply the load data and foundation drawing for every unit, and our crew checks the pad is level and cured before a single panel comes off the truck. If a pad is not right on installation day, we say so and come back — setting stone on a bad base to keep a schedule is a repair invoice with a delay attached.

The person who quotes your monument can walk onto the shop floor and see it being cut. There is no broker between the price and the work, no re-badged import, and no subcontracted install crew. Cutting, polishing, engraving, freight, and setting are all our own steps. That is also what the lifetime structural warranty rests on: we can stand behind every joint because we made every joint.

Ask who actually cuts the stone, and where. Ask whether engraving is sandblasted or surface-lasered. Ask what the anchoring pins are made of. Ask whether installation is the seller’s own crew or a subcontractor, and who returns if a joint opens in year five. A supplier who does the work answers those in a sentence each. A reseller has to go find out. That difference is most of what you are paying for either way — so it is worth knowing before you sign.
